Maison d’Education Légion d’Honneur (Seine Saint Denis)

Located next to the historic Saint Denis Basilica, the necropolis of the French Kings and Queen, the Maison d’Education is part of a small network of houses for education of the Legion of Honor created in 1805 by Napoleon.  Anxious to fill an educational void for young girls of soldiers who fell in battle  and convinced of the preponderant role that women will have to play in society, Napoleon I decreed in 1809 the creation of a second house of education in the former Abbey of Saint-Denis. The project is carried out by Comte de Lacépède, first Grand Chancellor of the Legion of Honor. A great restoration and development campaign  began in the 1820s, which led to the completion of the abbey as it can still be seen today. Its educational vocation has had a tremendous impact for over two centuries.
