Château de La Tourrette (Ardèche)
The Maison Forte de La Tourrette dates from the 15th and 16th centuries. It is a typical example of Vivarais châteaux with its master tower. It features a large rectangular building and a spiral staircase within a tower with an échauguette (smaller decorative tower). Built on a high terrace with thick walls used as sustaining walls and remparts, its many openings to shoot arrows are still visible. The present château was built next to a 14th château now in ruins. During the Wars of Religion the site played an important role and served as a prison for protestants.
