MET (NYC) Visitors to Versailles Exhibition

The Met, in collaboration with the Château de Versailles, presents the exhibition Visitors to Versailles (1682-1789) in the spring of 2018 in New York City. Under the direction of the Sun King, Louis XIV, Versailles was transformed from a simple hunting lodge to one of the most magnificent courts of Europe. The palace and the gardens attracted visitors from all over the world.

Unlike other European courts where access was restricted, Versailles was open to the public who gathered in hopes of catching a glimpse of the king or members of the royal family. French and foreign travelers, royalty, dignitaries, ambassadors, artists, musicians, writers, philosophers, scientists, and tourists all flocked to Versailles.
