The Paris Chapter invites you to an autumn day at Château de Villers-Cotterêts, now the Cité internationale de la langue française. Our members will be welcomed by Mr. Xavier Bailly, Deputy Director. Our members will be taking an entertaining and instructive journey through the French language and francophone culture around the world, as well as in France, at the heart of regional languages.

The Château de Villers-Cotterêts, built in the 16th century under François I, remained a royal residence until the 17th century. It was here, in August 1539, that François I issued the Ordonnance de Villers-Cotterêts, making the use of French mandatory in all official documents. This ordinance is the oldest piece of legislation still in force in France.

The château, which bears witness to Renaissance and Italian architecture, was disused for a long time, before being restored in 2020 by the Centre des monuments nationaux (CMN).

This a French language visit.
