A true false journal of Adrienne de La Fayette—that is how the work of Sabine Renault-Sablonière, herself a descendant of the “hero of the two Worlds,” can be described.
A false journal, because although the events mentioned are real and the documentation and research work is considerable, everything surrounding it—everything that gives this book its “flesh”—comes entirely from the author’s pen.
A true journal, because through these “imaginations,” the real Adrienne undoubtedly emerges, at least in her deepest, most secret nature.
The result is a book that reads like a novel, with characters to whom we grow attached as we read—extraordinary personalities with their joys, their dramas, the upheavals of History, which, despite their destructive potential, fail to annihilate individuals.
Beyond the romantic plot and the historical novel, the reader is offered, in the person of Adrienne, a superb lesson in love, loyalty, and dignity: Adrienne, a naïve and “romantic” young woman at first; Adrienne, wife of the brilliant La Fayette and mother of his children; Adrienne, a “business woman”; Adrienne, a resilient figure standing firm against stupidity and vulgarity; Adrienne, finally, the faithful support of a La Fayette who appears here in all his grandeur—a visionary whose ideas—of liberty and independence in particular—seem strikingly relevant today.
We will be most warmly welcomed by Mr. Marc Hostier.
