Join French Heritage Society’s Chicago-Midwest chapter and Heritage Auctions representative, Andrew Winger, for a lively presentation- with time for Q & A- that examines the unique evolution of money in La Nouvelle France and specifically the French Heritage Corridor – what is now Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri and Wisconsin – highlighting the colony’s reliance on barter, various forms of coinage including counterstamped foreign currency, and the world’s first use of playing card money. Set against the backdrop of early American trade networks and socioeconomic circumstances of the time, Andrew’s fascinating presentation explores how European and Indigenous economic systems shaped the foundations of modern commerce in the Midwestern United States.
The presentation starts promptly at 6:00 p.m. Apéro and light bites will be served.
