1814 – Louis XVIII regains the throne of his ancestors. He learns that the tombs of the martyred sovereigns, King Louis XVI, his brother, and Queen Marie-Antoinette, are located in the new Cemetery of the Madeleine, in disuse since 1794.  After the  “100 Days”, Louis XVIII, restored to the throne, has the bodies reburied at the Abbey of Saint Denis on January 21st, 1815.  He decides to erect a commemorative monument (a skilled politician, he does not use the term…
