Not having been able to accommodate everyone for our visit last month, Gregory Teillet of the Bational Archives will kindly welcome us again. Since 1808, the National Archives have been housed in the Hôtel de Soubise, built for the Prince and Princess of Soubise in the early 18th century on the site of a former townhouse. The Hotel is the starting point of the extension of the institution in the Marais: the Quadrilateral of the Archives. Even though ccertain sites were built in the 19th and 20th centuries, this unique heritage complex is made up of former residences of the Ancient Régime. The Hôtel de Rohan became part of the complex in 1928. The former Palace of the Cardinals of Rohan was built in the 18th century and then served as the National Printing Office for 120 years before being acquired by the National Archives. Since 2011, the Ministry of Culture and the National Archives have embarked on a ambitious renovation project for the Hôtel de Rohan. The sumptuous restored salons of Hôtel de Rohan, closed to the public for twenty years, are exceptional examples of interior decorations from the Louis XV period. Like the majestic salons of the Hôtel de Soubise, the most remarkable example of Rococo decor in France today, the Hôtel de Rohan will be open to the general public after restoration. The rooms of the Grand Chancellery d’Orléans have already been installed on the ground floor but will only be open to the public at the end of the restoration of the Hôtel de Rohan in 2024.The National Archives received a FHS grant of $305,000 in 2022 for the restoration of Christophe Huet’s Cabinet des Singes in the Hôtel de Rohan, with the support of the Florence Gould Foundation.
