Les Mardis du Paris Chapter: Vauville – An Extraordinary Southern Garden in Normandy

Tuesday, April 13

Event Navigation

For our next “Les Mardis du Paris Chapter” series, join us for a virtual tour with Eric Pellerin, owner of the château and extraordinary garden of Vauville. Eric is a producer of cultural documentaries and co-chairman of the Young Patrons’ Circle Paris. At the far reaches of the Cotentin Peninsula, improbably, lies an incredible oasis bringing together more than 1000 species of plants from the southern hemisphere. Covering an area of 4.5 hectares, the Botanical Garden of Vauville is a journey to the antipodes of the climate of Normandy.
The garden features a succession of green rooms that are as exotic as they are surprising, creating a sublime setting around the château, whose construction began in the 12th century. Discover the palm groves of trachycarpus fortunei from China, the moats where the royal ferns of Tasmania are enthroned, the imposing basin of gunneras manicata from Brazil, the eucalyptus trees of the basin of wisdom and smell the scents of the exotic garden. Thanks to the Gulf Stream current which passes off the coasts of Vauville,  fascinating tropical essences thrive that the creator of this small paradise, the botanist and perfumer Éric Pellerin, grandfather of the current owner, has been able to acclimatize since 1948.

Today at the head of the Vauville estate, Éric Pellerin is first and foremost a producer and director of cultural documentaries. Passionate about the garden and the château since his childhood, he took care of the work, communications and events very early on. When his father Guillaume Pellerin passed away in 2015, who, with his wife Cléophée de Turckheim, created the garden as you will discover it, Éric decides to embark on an adventure and settled in this paradise year-round. Over time, he has expanded the botanical collection, developed visitor tools for all audiences, and promotes international recognition of the garden and brings it into the “Botanical Gardens of France and Francophone Countries”, a guarantee of the quality of the site. New challenges include financing the two botanical greenhouses that the garden requires. The program will conclude with a question and answer session moderated by Jennifer Herlein, FHS Executive Director.
