Event Navigation

The FHS New York Chapter invites you to an exciting presentation in partnership with Transatlantic Values: Saint Omer Foundation.

François Decoster, Mayor of Saint-Omer (Pas-de-Calais), will tell the incredible story of Americans in Saint Omer, of Charles Carroll and his cousins, Daniel and John Carroll, and how their stay at the Jesuit College of St. Omer influenced their childhood, ultimately leading them to play a key role in the birth of the American nation.

In the 18th century, St. Omer had more American students of eminent families than Oxford and Cambridge combined. Imagine for a moment how three grandsons of Irish Catholic immigrants crossed the Atlantic Ocean for several months to join the prestigious college of the Jesuits of Saint-Omer and its chapel. After several years in Europe, they returned to the English colony of Maryland where they each went on to play a major role in the construction of the American nation’s political and constitutional foundations.

Charles Carroll was a U.S. Senator in Maryland and a signer of the Declaration of Independence; Daniel Carroll was a signer of the Articles of Confederation and the Constitution; John Carroll was the first American Catholic bishop and a founder of Georgetown University, which was led by the Jesuits.

François Decoster has worked for the preservation of the Jesuit Chapel of Saint-Omer, highlighting the link between American students and the town of Saint-Omer in the 18th century. In 2017, FHS awarded a grant of $ 250,000 with the support of the Florence Gould Foundation for the restoration of this historic site whose links with America are so important.

Edouard-François de LENCQUESAING is the President of the Saint-Omer Foundation for Transatlantic Values.

Pierre-Antoine GATIER is the Chief Architect for Historic Monuments in charge of the restoration of the Jesuit Chapel of Saint-Omer

The event will be held at 6:30pm at the Consulate General of France in New York City with a cocktail reception to follow.
